Saturday, 21 November 2015 saw the grand graduation ceremony of the University of Sheffield International Faculty CITY College, that took place in Thessaloniki, Greece, at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall. In this special celebration more than 200 Bachelors, Masters and PhD graduates from more than 20 countries, who completed their studies at the International Faculty, were presented their awards by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sheffield, Professor Sir Keith Burnett, before 1500 guests.

The graduation followed the same academic procession as the University of Sheffield’s ceremonies in the UK. In his speech Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Keith Burnett, congratulated all graduates and commented: “Although we are in one sense a world away from the Victorian red-brick buildings of Sheffield, you are in every sense our graduates and you carry the good name of The University of Sheffield into your careers and your futures. Today is a day of celebration and for you to feel a deserved pride in what you have achieved.” Professor Sir Keith Burnett was joined by Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shearer West, and other senior academic colleagues from the British university.

Mr Yiannis Ververidis, Principal of the International Faculty CITY College also delivered a speech during which he addressed the graduates: “In these difficult times, we are absolutely confident that all of you have the knowledge, the skills and the capacity to meet the sophisticated demands of this new era. You possess the qualities to be highly successful yourselves and at the same time contribute to building a better future for the society at large”.

In the frame of the ceremony Dr George Eleftherakis, Reader (Associate Professor) and Mr Thanos Hatziapostolou, Senior Lecturer, both from our Computer Science Department, were honoured to receive a 'Senate 'Award of Sustained Excellence in Learning and Teaching' by the University of Sheffield in recognition of their exceptional and inspirational teaching skills and their valuable contribution to students' learning experience.

During the ceremony six distinguished alumni were awarded with the ‘Distinguished Alumni Award’ in recognition of their prominent professional achievements: Mr Panche Kralev, President of the Board of Directors of Makedonski Telekom (Deutsche Telekom Group) from Skopje, Mr Visar Kelmendi, CEO, Rugove from Kosovo, Ms Mirela Arqimandriti, Executive Director, Gender Alliance for Development Center from Albania, Ms Sanja Milakovic Kolundzija, Principal, ‘Executive Group’, integrated communications advisory, from Serbia, Ms Katerina Siampani, Gestalt Psychotherapist and Trainer from Greece and Ms Gratiela Constantin, President of Tax Committee at Romanian Banking Association, Director at CEC Bank from Romania. The ceremony was followed by a reception at the foyer of Thessaloniki Concert Hall where graduates celebrated their achievement together with their family and friends.

The event was well-attended by representatives of authorities and organisations from Greece and the neighbouring countries, as well as prominent personalities from academia, business and politics who honoured this special event with their presence. Distinguished guests included Professor Athanasios Tsaftaris,Institute of Agrobiotechnology, Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH), Ms Constantina Athanassiadou, Greek Ambassador in Prishtina, Kosovo, Mr Konstantinos Gioulekas, Member of the Greek Parliament, Prof. Arsim Bajrami, Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Republic of Kosovo, Ms Vanya Kastreva, Vice Minister of Education of Bulgaria, Prof. Sergei Ignatov, Ex-Minister of Education, Bulgaria, Ms Maria Tsakali, Honorary Consul General, Consulate of Great Britain in Thessaloniki, Mr Kostantinos Kaggelidis, President, of Information Technology Companies of Northern Greece (SEPVE) and many others.
