Research at the Computer Science Department

Mission statement

Research is a core activity in the Computer Science Department (CSD). The fact that 100% of the staff are active in research at an international level, proves that. Members of the department publish in international journals and conferences, participate in funded research and are extremely active in professional activities, either by chairing organizing and scientific committees of international conferences, or by participating in editorial boards of international conferences, or joining the administration boards of professional societies.

CSD aims to facilitate the development and enhancement of ICTs for researchers, practitioners, educators and private sector partners involved. It focuses in developing regional capacity in the adoption and the application of ICTs for interdisciplinary policy problems through well-funded, applied and high-quality social and technical research activities, aided by our enhanced dissemination of knowledge through well-established networks in South East Europe and beyond.

Active research groups

Software Engineering & Service-Oriented Technologies (SoE) Research Group

The aim of the SoE research group is the investigation of software engineering methodologies and the development of tools that will support the engineering process of service-oriented applications. The research interests of the group include service-oriented architecture, web service technologies, agile methodologies, formal methods, object-oriented analysis and design techniques.

Intelligence, Modelling & Computation (IMC) Research Group

The Intelligence, Modelling & Computation (IMC) research group is concern with research in the general area of artificial intelligence. In particular the group is concerned with (but not only) the formal aspects of modelling agent and multi-agent systems, as well as semantic web services; constraint logic programming and its application to novel areas such as formal modelling and verification; modelling and computation of biological systems.

The Information Security, Networks and Mobility part of the group deals with sensor networks using innovative techniques to realize it through a flexible architecture to support totally distributed systems. It also deals with security aspects and implements the interest and expertise of the department in the more IT/CS related aspects of security and especially security frameworks and protocols and the application of formal methods in this sensitive and critical area. Also focus is given to mobile devices and robotics. The group will use the technology to provide services and support to other groups and to external users or customers.  This requires actions in a multidisciplinary level to take place. That is why one of the aims of the group is to bring people from several disciplines together.

The Centre for Learning and Teaching Research (CeLT)

CeLT is a multidisciplinary research group of CITY College that engages in academically rigorous and socially meaningful research focused on concepts, methods, applications and use of information and communication technologies that support teaching and learning in a range of contexts (formal education, the workplace, informal settings for learning such as libraries and home internet use). One of the primary goals of the group is to investigate innovative methods that facilitate teaching and foster learning and meet learners' growing needs, as well as, social and technological changes of the 21st century.
