Are you a new student at the International Faculty CITY College? Then you will find the information below useful to get you started!

Getting started

Username and password

ILC Membership

You need your International Faculty CITY College computer account to access Library & Computing Services.

 

Your personal username & password will be given to you during the Induction Week and will allow you to log in to all services including: MOLE (Unit materials), online library resources, computing facilities, email & other applications.

 

Your username cannot be changed.

 

If you forget or wish to change your password you should go to the Computing Support Staff, L. Sofou building, 7th floor.

 

 

Complete your membership form and register with the library. Membership allows a student to:

 

  • Borrow, reserve, renew items
  • Access the electronic resources
  • Use of the library computing facilities and services.
  • Print, Scan and photocopy
  • Reserve study spaces & rooms
  • Use library equipment

 

Your StudentID is personal. Do not lend it to anyone else.

In case you lose it, immediately inform the Library Services Desk.

 

MUSE account

Find your way around

MUSE gives personalized access to the University of Sheffield e-resources, including, STARPlus, Google Scholar links, personal email & address book.

To obtain an account:

 

Visit the ILC at L. Sofou building, 6th floor. The ILC staff is always ready to answer any queries you may have about the Library and its resources and help you as a new student to successfully find your way around.

Information for off-campus students

AWAY from the College! You can still access ILC resources and services!

The Information & Learning Commons (ILC) provides a range of resources and services that can be accessed by off-campus users. These pages are intended to help you make the most of these resources and services and to support your throughout your studies whilst physical away from the College.

 

Obtaining an Account

All newly registered students receive a computer account with a personal username and password, which allows them to use International Faculty, CITY College’s web facilities, such as email, Intranet, MOLE, etc and access library resources, as well.  In case off- campus students need more information about their account, they may contact the Computing Support Services.

 

MUSE Account

MUSE, is the University of Sheffield (TUOS) portal, designed to give students and staff personalized access to digital resources. MUSE allows you to:

  • Use STARPlus, the Library catalogue tosearch for all electronic & print books, journals, theses, White RoseResearch Online (WRRO) content, databases, maps, images & sounds.
  • Use “Articles and More” optionto do literature searches of multiple databases simultaneously.
  • SearchGoogle Scholar and find links to Sheffield’sLibrary full text context.
  • Sendand receive emails and create a personal address book.

  • Follow the instructions on the screen to set up your new MUSE account

 

MOLE (My On-line Learning Environment)

Use your computer account to access Unit details, (syllabi & lecture notes), exercises & coursework, forums & on-line chat (with instructors & students), and other collaborative tools etc.

Student Skills & Personal Development Resources

This section of MOLE includes “IF301 – "On-line Tutorials: Skills and How To" – a series of documents and online instructional videos that will help students develop their learning, writing, research and communication skills.

 

ILC Website

The ILC website includes detailed information about library collections & resources, services and facilities. It is the main access point for all online services and electronic subscriptions.

 

Online Library Catalogue

OpenABEKT Online Library Catalogue contains information about material held by the lILC, such as books, periodicals, dissertations and audio-visual material.  With an e-mail or phone call you can make a request.

 

Subject Guides

If your are looking for information on a specific topic you may check out the ILC’s online Subject Guides which are tailor-made resources aimed at helping students to find relevant and useful information and resources. Organised into relevant subject areas, students can access these subject guides at any time. 
In the subject guides, you will find:

  • Resources for subject related areas
  • A list with online databases
  • Open access resources
  • Selected, high quality websites
  • Research tips and referencing instructions 

Alternatively, check the University of Sheffield Library Subject Guides for further help on your assignment or research topic.

 

Electronic Resources

Online databases give you access to the latest information on a variety of subjects. You will find full-text journals, conference proceedings, newspapers, statistics, standards, and other reference resources, and all from the convenience of your own computer.

You will need a username and password in order to remotely access most of the e-resources. Contact the ILC staff for more information.

 

Internet Resources

While the print collections and e-resources are subscription services, there are also a vast number of free Web sites that can be valuable sources of information. The ILC’s web pages provide links to a variety of useful Internet sites including search engines, subject gateways, scholarly open access journal titles, statistics, etc.

From the main page, select Internet Resources to view various websites that the ILC staff has identified as being particularly useful for research. There are sites selected by field of study, including, business, computer science, psychology, social sciences and other areas of the curriculum. Also on Research & Support pages link to our Info Skills Resources.

 

Interlibrary Request Service (IRS)

The IRS offers students, researchers and academics the option to obtain material such as articles, book chapters, conference proceedings and reports that is not part of the library collection, via consortia suppliers.

Off campus students may send their submit interlibrary loan requests electronically at library@citycollege.sheffield.eu

 

Document Delivery Service (DDS)

The DDS ensures desktop or postal delivery of documents to those who cannot visit the ILC, through our photocopying and scanning service just by sending an email at library@citycollege.sheffield.eu with full bibliographic details of an item.

 

Reference and Research Help

Students may contact (email, phone) the ILC staff for general information, reference consultations and advice. For assistance with subject requests, it is important that students supply as much information as possible about their assignment/project topic when contacting the Library.

Information for alumni

Graduate students of International Faculty, CITY College continue to be an important part of our academic community long after they complete their studies. They are therefore welcome to use any of the library services, resources and facilities for reference and private study. The contact point for further information is the Library Services Desk.

 

Access to Services & Facilities

Former students who wish to use the ILC resources, services and facilities are welcome to apply for membership. Graduates may register and become members with no fee. Membership forms are available at the Library Services Desk. Personal ID or Passport is required for registration. Registration includes access to all print material, such as books, audiovisual media, periodicals and electronic services and resources. 

 

Borrowing Entitlements

Registration to the ILC entitles alumni to the following:

Loan of two books

  • The normal loan period is two weeks, unless recalled by another user
  • Renewal by telephone or e-mail (two weeks maximum)

 

Returning loans

Borrowed items should always be returned in person at the Library Services Desk and during the library’s opening hours.

 

Overdue items 

Strict fines apply to those who return to the Library overdue items. Failure to return an overdue item will result in the withdrawal of all borrowing entitlements, including access to computing and electronic resources.

 

Renewing loans

Renewals can be made in person at the Library Services Desk. Alternatively, if you cannot visit the ILC you can use the telephone or e-mail renewal service. E-mail renewal requests may be sent to: library@citycollege.sheffield.eu. Renewals are allowed only for the standard loan items, provided no one else has applied for reservation.

 

Computing & Information Resources

The ILC computers are equipped with the latest software and technology. Computing facilities are to be used for research and study-related purposes.

The wireless network can be accessed from anywhere in the ILC. Laptops can be connected and used in all areas where reading tables and plugs are available.

Scanning and Printing facilities

A scanner, color and black & white printers are available for use near the computing facilities of the ILC. Please note that printing is charged 0.03 cents per page.

 

Electronic Resources

The E-resources, including the ABEKT Library Catalogue, may be also accessed from the main ILC web page, by clicking on the related links. Use these services to: 

  • Check what books the library holds
  • Check what journals the library holds
  • Search for subject resources via our Subject Pages
  • Access bibliographic and full text databases
  • Access the e-journals collection
  • Find links to various Web Resources

 

Interlibrary Request Service

The IRS offers students, researchers and academics the option to obtain material such as articles, extracts of books, conference proceedings and reports, that is not part of the library collection, either in print or electronically, via consortia suppliers. Before making a request, advise OpenABEKT library catalogue or check the e-resources to ensure that the item is not in stock. All requests should be sent to library@citycollege.sheffield.eu

 

Photocopying

A self-service photocopy machine is housed in a separate room for the reproduction of extracts of books, theses or periodicals. There is a printing charge of 0.03 cents per page.

 

Abuse of ILC Regulations

The ILC staff has the authority to determine whether a user’s behavior is improper, or if this behavior inconveniences other library users, or causes damage in the ILC. Abuse of ILC regulations may result in loss of all membership privileges.

The primary aim of the Information & Learning Commons is to support the teaching, learning and research needs the International Faculty CITY College students and staff. Therefore, services to the wider academic and local community are provided, where this can be achieved, without interfering with the library’s main objective.

 

Access to Services & Facilities

Individuals who wish to use the library services and facilities are welcome to apply for membership. External users may register and become members. Membership forms are available at the Library Services Desk. Personal ID or Passport is required for registration. 
Membership entitles external users to the following:

  • Access to print material from the standard loan collections
  • Borrowing entitlements
  • Use of the computing and reproduction services

All external users are required to comply with the Library's rules and regulations, print copies of which are handed out upon registration.
