The programme

Today's dynamic environment demands that organizations and their managers adapt and renew themselves continually to succeed over time. Success in this highly competitive business environment requires sound strategic, managerial and entrepreneurial skills. The programme aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to identify and pursue opportunities either within an organisation or independently by starting a new venture that offers an innovative product or service. Irrespective of the organisational setting, sound managerial skills and knowledge in key functional areas are equally critical for the success of any new project or venture activity. The programme is addressed but not limited to students who recently acquired their bachelor's degree and would like to upgrade and extend their business studies before becoming entrepreneurs or managers, and to those already working in the profession who wish to improve their management qualifications.

Research Methods for Business
This unit provides a series of lectures on academic presentation, writing skills and an introduction to research issues and methods. The unit examines a wide range of research methodologies, both qualitative and quantitative, with reference to their philosophical base and practical application in marketing, management, banking and the leisure industry. The aim is to help students design, implement and apply their own research as well as to equip them to be able to critically evaluate published material. Back to top

This unit involves an overview of the processes and systems which are involved in the receipt, transformation and delivery of products and services in modern organisations. This unit involves critical exploration of core concepts in current organisational theory with comprehensive analysis of the new managerial implications and practices. Accounting and Finance for Managers
Analysis of three key aspects of accounting practice. Management accounting involves the provision of information internally to facilitate processes of management control. Financial strategy concerns processes of capital investment and treasury management. Back to top

Business Strategy and Analytics
Students will learn how to analyze internal and external factors affecting a business, including market dynamics, industry trends, competitive forces, and organizational capabilities. Entrepreneurship: Innovation, Creativity and Problem Solving
This unit presents an overview of entrepreneurship both as a process and as a style of management. It covers both the theoretical and practical issues facing independent entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial managers. The unit helps develop a framework for thinking as it provides a scheme for clarifying the factors and issues that are of critical importance in a business situation, helps to indicate the decisions that might be relevant to it and identifies the necessary elements in being able to exploit its potential. The unit initially examines the factors that influence and support entrepreneurial activity and behaviour. Support mechanisms and sources of finance for new ventures and ideas will also be discussed. Further, it presents a framework through which new ventures and growth firms can create entrepreneurial organisational systems, structures and cultures. Back to top

Performance Management and Leadership
Performance management is a process which contributes to the effective management of individuals and teams in order to achieve high levels of organisational performance. As such, it establishes shared understanding about what is to be achieved and an approach to leading and developing people which will ensure that it is achieved. It involves the alignment of human resource strategy and organisational strategy to effectively reach organisational objectives. There are different levels of performance, employee, team and organisational all of which contribute to the wellbeing of the organisation. The aims of this unit is to introduce the student to the concepts, techniques and processes of employee performance management, reward systems and their importance in achieving organisational growth. Three dimensions will be incorporated to the unit:

  1. performance development and improvement,
  2. managing behaviour to avoid poor performance and

Project and Risk Management
This module provides an introduction to the theory and practice of risk management and an overview of project management. Risk management is a multidisciplinary field involving economics, mathematics, finance and computer science. Throughout the module, the students will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on exercises, case studies and simulations to apply project management and risk management concepts in practical scenarios. The dissertation represents a piece of individual and original research based on an approved topic of the student’s choice related to the course and selected in consultation with tutors. The term ‘originality’ here does not necessarily imply that the dissertation will develop new theoretical insights or models but that it clearly demonstrates the development of new insights and knowledge in the candidates own mind and work.
