Introduction to Communication
The purpose of this module is to help students become ethical, effective and flexible communicators. The complexities together with the significance of communication are discussed throughout the module. The process and models of communication are examined within our everyday life. However, students are able to apply these into different contexts. More specifically, the module will examine the process of creating meaning and verbal and non-verbal communication, which will provide students with the foundations of communication, as well as communication technologies, organisational communication, mass communication, etc. Back to top

Understanding Digital Media
The module offers a comprehensive overview of digital media history from the birth of the personal computer through the advent of the Internet and mobile phones to the digitisation of analogue media. Through the historical development of digital media, students will be able to understand the most important turning points in the digitalisation of communication and the increasingly important role of digital media in everyday life. Academic English Skills
This module instructs students in all aspects of academic communication including writing, reading, speaking and listening as well as offering opportunities for vocabulary enrichment and lexical and structural improvement specific to academic communication. The module also provides space for students to consider how technology is used in the academic communication process. Using a variety of different teaching and learning methods students will be given the opportunity to practice and improve their overall use of academic English so that by the end of the module they are proficient in the specifics of academic discourse appropriate to their field of study. This module acts as a support mechanism to the linguistic demands expected of students in their core subjects i.e. Communication and Digital Media. The module seeks to improve overall language use through contemporary issues that relate to the role of the individual in contemporary society, as well as those pertinent to the student’s own field of study. Digital Literacy
This module instructs students in all aspects of digital and academic communication, while it helps them consider how modern information technology tools are used in the academic communication process. Students will be presented with the appropriate tools for advanced searching, creation and editing of text and web documents, on-line collaboration, time management and creation of effective presentations. Principles of Management
Individuals working in organisations in the twenty-first century will have a greater need than ever for effective management skills. As fierce global competition is expected to continue to accelerate, it is these skills that will help organisations to differentiate. Gaining and sustaining a competitive advantage will become more critical to survival and success. Students attending this module will be given the opportunity for an in-depth understanding of the basic management functions to be utilised in future courses and in their everyday working lives which include: planning, organising, leading and controlling. Emphasis will be placed on entrepreneurship and innovation in an era in which innovating quickly to stay ahead of competition has become more important than ever. Back to top

Principles of Marketing
Marketing is the business activity that identifies developing and changing marketing needs and wants. Through effective marketing, companies and organisations can effectively develop products and services that satisfy the needs of target customers. Marketing also deals with pricing, promoting and defining the most appropriate channels to make these products and services available. Marketing foundations remain relevant and largely unchanged. However, the environment where marketing is practised has changed considerably in the past two decades. Fierce competition, very short product life cycles, global markets, pandemics, the Internet and its applications create a very challenging environment for today’s enterprises where marketing has become indispensable. Digital media technologies have become increasingly important in main facets of our social life. Our daily habits, work and identities have been affected significantly by the advent and development of social media platforms and the digital world. This module examines the intertwined relationship between digital media and society by exploring key theories and studies. Back to top

Language and Communication
The module introduces students to core concepts and principles in the study of language and communication. More specifically, the module familiarises students with the field of Linguistics and its subfields: Sociolinguistics and Pragmatics. It presents fundamental theories on language and communication, as well as on the relation between language and society. Back to top

Human Computer Interaction
This module provides an introduction to Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and user experience (UX) principles. More specifically, students learn what usability in digital media is and how it can be measured, how HCI can be used in all phases of the software development process, and how HCI can be used to evaluate the usability of a software system. Finally, they are taught a systematic method for designing usable UIs (User Interfaces). Back to top

 

Stage 2

Writing across Media
This module is designed to teach students the way messages should be adapted across different media. The way we write depends greatly on the different media we use. Both the analysis of our audience and the communication channel we choose determine the style we will adopt. Students will experience the writing format both in traditional media such as press releases, advertising, news, as well as in new media such as blogs. Basic media writing techniques will be discussed along with writing on the web. A variety of in-class activities will include different writing projects, such as blogging, news and feature stories, press releases, etc. Back to top

Mobile and Social Media Journalism
The module examines the use of mobile devices and social media platforms by journalists for gathering, producing and distributing news content in line with organisation policies and practices. It also presents the fundamental skills required in digital journalism and emphasises the role of the audience, as well as the challenges and risks involved in the news production process via social media platforms. Digital Imaging Production
This module introduces students to digital imaging production by examining key concepts and techniques through various examples of contemporary creative practices. It also discusses issues of originality and creativity, as well as ethical and legal issues of digital imaging creation and use. During the practical sessions of the module, students will have the opportunity to explore the practical applications of digital imaging and will learn how to use digital camera equipment and image editing software. Digital and Social Media Marketing
The module explores the constantly changing nature of digital marketing with an emphasis on social media. It examines the main principles, theories and practices relating to digital marketing through a series of case studies. Students are introduced to different digital and social media marketing strategies, they learn how to identify business needs, analyse online customer markets, and develop a successful digital presence. The development of digital media has transformed political communication. This module examines the role of the media in the political process and discusses the ways in which political actors communicate their messages in the digital era. The module examines politics, democracy and the media, the effects of political communication, media as political actors, advertising and public relations in party political communication, as well as political communication in a globalised world. Intercultural Communication and Diversity
In the 21st century, century, it is even more imperative to learn to respect diversity and communicate effectively with other cultures. This module discusses how cultures and social groups use communication in different ways. More specifically, it examines key topics, theories and themes of intercultural communication and aims to raise awareness about issues of equity, diversity and inclusion in communication. This module aims to teach students how to adapt their messages to the audiences of different social media. The module presents the key principles of social media writing and provides students with guidelines and tools to write effectively on social media. Through a series of practical tasks, students will be able to enhance their writing, editing and proofreading skills, and learn how to promote and increase their social media presence. Back to top

Digital Video and Audio Production
This module introduces students to digital video and audio production by examining contemporary practices, trends and developments in the field. It offers the necessary theoretical background, as well as a critical exploration of different approaches to audio and video production. During the practical sessions of the module, students will have the opportunity to acquire core digital camera and audio recording skills, as well as to develop their post-production skills. Social Psychology
The module introduces students to major theories and research in social psychology. More specifically, it examines key areas of social cognition and social attribution, as well as attitudes, social influence, relationships, stereotyping and group membership. It also discusses how social psychology can be applied to different domains and its relevance to everyday life. Back to top

Data Analysis and Communication
This module introduces students to data presentation, analysis and interpretation for communication purposes. In the first part of the module, students will learn how to present and communicate data through the use of descriptive statistics, graphs and tables. In the second part, students will be introduced to methods of extracting data from the web and social media to answer critical questions about society and organisations. Back to top

Public Relations
This module introduces students to the profession of Public Relations manager. Public relations are often negatively represented through the media. This is why the module emphasises the need to become ethical and socially responsible public relations managers. Case studies will be examined focusing on both good and bad practices. Students will be able to understand the internal and external environment of a company and familiarise themselves with different stakeholder groups and the different ways of approaching them. Media relations, crisis communication and employee communication will be heavily discussed. The module also places emphasis on the use of social media in communicating and building positive relationships with the public. Back to top

Case Studies in Digital Transformation
The rate and magnitude of the changes underway are already affecting our world in profound ways. Innovations in mobile technology, the Internet of Things, and robotics are reshaping consumer behaviour and business trends. They are affecting people’s work and social relationships. Organisations that are looking to the future have acknowledged this and are trying to adapt to stay relevant and drive growth. Companies, governments, and non profit organisations, all have the power to accomplish good things with the advances in robotics, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of things. Digital transformation is all about figuring that out. This module deals with several of the transformations that have arisen in contemporary organisations as a result of the implementation and utilisation of information systems. The module examines a selection of case studies to explore, familiarise and identify the challenges/opportunities that have arisen in contemporary organisations focusing on: Industry 4.0, Fintech - blockchain, digital currencies, social media; The new types of jobs and organisational structures in the digitalized enterprise; Digital Consumption; e-commerce, e-Healthcare, big data, digital security, privacy and ethics. Gender and Digital Media
This module examines issues of gender construction, identity and representation in digital media. More specifically, the module introduces key concepts and theories in gender and digital media studies and familiarises students with research methodologies used for the examination of gender issues. During the sessions, students will discuss topics such as the construction of feminine, masculine and LGBTQ+ identities in digital media, the objectification of men and women by the media, and gender stereotypes promoted by the media. Negotiation and Conflict Management
This module introduces students to concepts and theories of negotiation and conflict management and aims at cultivating further their communication, negotiation and persuasion skills. Students will have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with different strategies and approaches to conflict resolution which can be applied on an organisational level, but also internationally. Animation Theory and Design
The module provides a historical overview of animation and introduces students to the main principles, theories and practices of animation. Students will explore and critically examine different styles of animation through various case studies, and they will learn to use animation software to create their own animated sequences. Research Methods
This module has been designed to familiarise students with principles and tools of research and to equip them with the essential practical and theoretical foundations necessary for independent research. The module builds on the knowledge and skills acquired in Data Analysis and Communication, and offers students the opportunity to explore further a wide range of key research practices, such as the literature review, research design, data collection, data analysis, research ethics, etc. Examples of good practice as well as potential practical and theoretical problems are explored in a range of research contexts. Students receive systematic and ongoing practical training in a variety of research methods and the corresponding tools, and they are also encouraged to reflect critically on their own research practices. Digital Government
The module introduces students to the concept of digital government and discusses the role of digital technologies in the public sector. More specifically, the module offers theoretical and empirical insights to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of digital government processes, challenges, impacts and implications. It also examines case studies of e-governance and e-government from various countries around the world. Back to top

Digital Storytelling
The module introduces students to digital storytelling, the practice of using digital technologies to create and tell stories. More specifically, it examines concepts, theories and technologies which are central to the creation of digital stories and discusses the impact of digital storytelling on contemporary culture. It also provides students with the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to generate and tell their own digital stories. Back to top

Personal Data and Privacy
The module examines data protection and privacy issues. Students will be introduced to recent developments in the protection of personal data and they will familiarise themselves with the different types of data and the existing EU regulation. They will also learn to evaluate and critically reflect on legal and ethical issues of data protection and privacy. Back to top

Individual Project
The purpose of this module is to provide students with the opportunity to develop an individual research project on a particular topic of their choice, which will fall under the broader area of Communication and Digital Media Studies. Students will decide on an appropriate topic for research, they will form a research question, they will review the literature on the particular subject, they will collect and analyse primary or secondary data, report their findings, make conclusions and recommendations for future research and they will produce an appropriately structured Dissertation. This process will allow students to demonstrate their knowledge on the scientific subject and gain new knowledge on the discipline. It will also demonstrate their ability to conduct genuine research within the specific field of studies and critically evaluate issues arising from the specific topic. Furthermore, to further support students, a series of lectures and seminars will be delivered during the Spring Semester, followed by tutoring sessions based on the needs of individual research projects. More specifically, through the modules Writing across Media, Mobile and Social Media Journalism, Writing for Social Media, and Digital and Social Media Marketing, students will learn how to produce and edit shareable content on different social media platforms and digital media. Similarly, through the modules Digital Imaging Production, Digital Video and Audio Production, Animation Theory and Design, and Digital Storytelling, students will learn to use professional equipment and software effectively for the creation of digital imaging, digital audio and video content, and animation. Moreover, throughout the programme students will have the opportunity to enhance key professional and personal skills which are absolutely necessary in the contemporary workplace. The Career, Employability and Enterprise Centre, focuses on helping students to set attainable career goals. It offers advice on CVs and cover letters, and on how to effectively handle job interviews. Through career fairs, and different internship programmes, the department aims at constantly bringing students in contact with prospective employers. 

Every spring we organize the Annual Career Fair providing our students with the opportunity to get a first feel of job seeking. During the event students and alumni have interview opportunities with corporate recruiters and present their skills and abilities to potential employers. Large companies, organisations and multinationals from different industries across S.E. Europe participate every year in our Career Fair and offer employment and internship opportunities to our students and graduates.
